Machining—making components for IC steppers and scanners

The precision-finishing process for high-precision metallic components

  • 1.Component for which processing using automatic computer-controlled machine tools has been completed. The component is already fairly complex in shape.

  • 2.The component is measured in order to identify sections whose size differs from the required size (albeit by only a few micrometers).

  • 3.A jig for immobilizing the component is placed on the milling machine's table.

  • 4.The component is inserted into the jig to immobilize it.

  • 5.The cutting edge is rotated and the appropriate section is cut.

  • 6.The cutting edge is halted, completing the cutting process.

  • 7.The precision of the processed section is measured, and if it is now within the standard tolerance limits, the work is completed. In practice, the processing and measurement are repeated until the required precision is achieved. No matter which section is being worked on or the degree of precision required, this can only be achieved through many years of experience.
