In February 2012, Nikon UK attained ISO 14001, an internationally recognised standard that demonstrates a commitment to evaluating and mitigating the impact of business activities on the environment. The company's use of raw materials and energy is continuously reviewed to reduce wastage, consumption and carbon dioxide emissions.
Nikon identifies preferred supplier companies that use sustainable sources and participate in Nikon's Green Procurement Standard. Recycling of materials is well-established: paper, cardboard, vending cups, plastic bottles and cans. The company has fitted energy-saving devices on lighting and office machinery, and aims to reduce travel by increased use of tele-conferencing and email. It promotes reduction in car use, and supports the use of public transport and car-sharing for business and commuting as well as encouraging healthy alternatives such as walking and cycling.
Charitable fund-raising & team-buildingAt Nikon U.K. Ltd. a decision is made regarding which charity organization to support each year after asking for the opinions of our employees. For 2012, staff chose to support Alzheimer's Research UK, which specialises in finding preventions, causes, treatments and a cure for dementia. Employees are ever more creative in finding ways of raising funds for example by running in the London marathon. Nikon has discovered that raising money can generate fun and team-building both within and across departments and divisions. Everyone gets involved in CSR activities, as CSR targets run alongside business objectives.
