Welcome to the digiscoping world!

What is Digiscoping? The Benefits of Digiscoping

What is Digiscoping?

Digiscoping is the word used to describe "the recording of images from a Fieldscope or a Spotting Scope with a digital camera." Its most distinctive feature is the ability*1 to achieve telephoto photography comparable to what supertelephoto lenses for SLR cameras can do. What makes this possible is the combination of the magnification of a Fieldscope with the focal length of a compact digital camera.*2

*1. Using the collimate shooting method
*2. How to calculate the composite focal length: Multiply the magnification of the eyepiece by the 35 mm equivalent focal length of a COOLPIX digital camera. For example, a Fieldscope ED82 with 30x Wide DS eyepiece and a COOLPIX P5000 results in a focal length of 1080 mm (when the camera is at the wide [36 mm] end of the zoom range). 30 x 36=1,080

Photographed with a camera only Photographed using digiscoping

COOLPIX: 126 mm ( 35mm camera equivalent focal length)

Fieldscope ED50 + 27x wide DS eyepiece + COOLPIX at 36 mm( 35 mm camera equivalent focal length) = 972 mm
