Nikon Supports Asian Football Events

Nikon Corporation (President: Teruo Shimamura) has become an official supporter of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), covering events such as AFC Asian Cup China 2004, AFC Champions League 2004, and ASIAN FOOTBALL QUALIFIERS 2004.

Established in 1954, the AFC comprises 45 nations stretching from Japan and China in the Far East right through to South East Asia, and into the Middle East. The Federation Internationale de Football Association, (FIFA) the governing body of international football recognizes the AFC as one of its six confederation members.

The impressive performances by both Japan and Korea at the 2002 FIFA World CupTM, has helped transform the image of Asian soccer, and validate Asia's emergence as a strong football region.

AFC Asian Cup China 2004 is the confederation's most prestigious event, comprising 14 qualification group winners, plus hosts China, and current Asian Cup champion, Japan. This 16-team tournament decides the national champion of Asia.

During the AFC Asian Cup China 2004, Nikon welcomes visitors by offering various activities as an official supporter. The Nikon booth is available in the Fan Village area of the Beijing Stadium. Visitors to the booth can see, touch and experience our new products COOLPIX 5200 and COOLPIX 4200, and enjoy photo and print service with the Asian Cup character BEIBEI in the background. The NPS (Nikon Professional Services) Depot is also available, which supports photographers capturing the exciting games until the final match.

AFC Champions League 2004 is Asia's premier club championship. Beginning with the opening rounds in February with the final in December, Asia's elite clubs including the top two in Japan, Korea and China, will battle it out in this year-long event to be crowned Asia's best club.

Match Japan v.s. UAE on March 18th, 2004

ASIAN FOOTBALL QUALIFIERS 2004 decides which three Asian countries will represent the continent at the 2004 Athens Olympics. The final qualifying round takes place from March to May 2004, and will be played in ten countries across Asia. The 12 nations advancing from the preliminary rounds have been split into 3 groups, two of which will play a home and away league format. Japan is in Group B, matched with UAE, Bahrain and Lebanon, and one round of matches will be played in the UAE and a second round of matches in Japan in March. The top team from each group will win a ticket to Athens.

As part of the sponsorship agreement, Nikon will have a number of pitch-side perimeter advertising boards and all media identity bibs at major events will be branded with the Nikon Corporate logo.

Nikon further aims to contribute to the development of Asian soccer by supporting AFC youth events such as "AFC U-17 Championship" and "AFC Youth Championship" tournaments where the future stars of Asia will be participating.
