Quick response that captures fleeting moments, offering blur-free, beautiful photos
High-performance, stylish models offering 10x and 7x zoom, each the world's thinnest in their class
TOKYO – Nikon Corporation is pleased to announce the release of two stylish new S-series models, the COOLPIX S8000 and S6000, both of which are equipped with high-power zoom NIKKOR lenses. These cameras have a refined design that makes them the thinnest in their class1 yet continue to offer quick response that captures fleeting moments, support for high sensitivities and a number of functions that reduce noise for blur compensation that results in beautiful images.
The COOLPIX S8000 and S6000 will completely satisfy users with their ability to capture the moment with beautiful, sharp images. With a new image processing engine and four advanced image stabilization features that prevent or reduce blur in photos—lens-shift vibration reduction, support for high sensitivities with low noise levels, refined motion detection, a new flash control system—blur and noise are reduced, enabling users to capture the images they intended under circumstances that frequently result in blurred images, such as with super-telephoto shooting, indoor scenes captured under dim lighting, and difficult backlit scenes. In addition, the high-power zoom NIKKOR lenses built into these cameras support shooting of a wide variety of scenes, from wide-angle to telephoto. Basic camera performance has also been refined with optimized image processing engines based on EXPEED, Nikon's own image processing concept, faster power-up and shooting response, smart portrait mode and the ability to record high-definition movies.
Development background
According to Nikon surveys of compact digital camera users, the primary complaint is the inability to take satisfactory photos that capture the moment or the ambience of a location. Specifically, 1. the inability to capture sharp, clear images under dim lighting, 2. troubles shooting at night, and 3. unnatural results when the flash is used. The COOLPIX S8000 and S6000 will eliminate such complaints, as well as prevent noticeable blur in photos taken with telephoto shooting.
The COOLPIX S8000 offers an effective pixel count of 14.2-million pixels and is equipped with a 10x optical zoom NIKKOR lens that covers a broad range of focal lengths, beginning at the wide-angle 30mm (35mm format equivalent). The refined design makes it the thinnest camera in its class1 with a depth of approximately 27.3 mm. The camera is also equipped with a creative slider function for adjusting the brightness, vividness and hue of pictures to be taken to suit individual preferences, as well as a 3-in., 921k-dot, wide viewing angle clear color panel TFT LCD monitor for crisp, vivid display. This stylish, high-power zoom camera will allow users to capture the moment and make the most of their individual creativity.
The COOLPIX S6000 offers an effective pixel count of 14.2-million pixels and is equipped with a 7x optical zoom NIKKOR lens that covers a broad range of focal lengths, beginning at the wide-angle 28mm (35mm format equivalent). It is the thinnest camera in its class2 with a depth of approximately 25 mm.
In addition to four advanced functions that enable beautiful, blur-free imaging, the COOLPIX S6000 is a high-speed model consistently able to capture the moment.

A series of advanced functions, beginning with the skin softening function that smoothes facial skin tones and continuing with face-priority AF, the smile timer, the blink proof function, the blink warning, and red-eye reduction function, ensure consistently great portraits.
- Subject tracking automatically tracks subjects to maintain focus
This function automatically recognizes human faces and then initiates subject tracking to follow the movement of the recognized subject. When a face is not automatically recognized, the target for subject tracking can be manually specified. The camera will automatically track the specified subject as it moves to continuously keep it in focus. Should the specified subject temporarily leave the frame for less than three seconds, the camera will resume tracking it once it re-enters the frame.
- Camera identification of the shooting scene. Scene auto selector mode makes capturing beautiful images worry free.
- High-definition movie recording
Nikon COOLPIX S8000 Primary Features
- Nikon's own compact design and new, thin lens barrel design has resulted in the thinnest body in its class with a 10x optical zoom NIKKOR lens and a depth of approximately 27.3 mm
The COOLPIX S8000 is the thinnest camera in its class despite a zoom lens that covers a broad focal range from wide-angle 30mm through super-telephoto 300mm (both 35mm format equivalent). This slim body was made possible with a new lens structure developed to reduce the length of the lens at the maximum telephoto position, a sliding mechanism that helps reduce body thickness when lens is retracted, and a lens-barrier structure that enables a lens barrel with a smaller diameter.
- 3-in., approximately 921k-dot, wide-viewing angle clear color panel TFT LCD monitor
A new structure that integrates the acrylic protection panel and LCD panel below it by eliminating the layer of air between the two has been adopted. This reduces reflection for overwhelmingly improved visibility outdoors for more vivid display of a broader range of colors and greater contrast. In addition to preserving the roughly 176-degree viewing angle, new technologies have been adopted for real-time control of backlight brightness, greater contrast and more efficient use of power.
- Creative slider for simple adjustment of brightness, vividness and hue
Image Brightness (exposure compensation), Vividness and Hue can be easily adjusted using the camera monitor as a guide to suit individual imaging preferences. Adjustment can be made in auto shooting mode using the rotary multi selector on the back of the camera.
- A sharp, high-performance design
The smooth curve around the lens gives the impression of a sharp, high-performance design. The rubber coating on the grip ensures a firm and steady hold for better operation. The COOLPIX S8000 will be available in four colors: black, champagne silver, red and brown.
