Compact, lightweight scope for birdwatching and nature viewing Nikon introduces Fieldscope ED50 series models
October 13, 2005
Nikon Vision Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Nikon Corporation, has released two new compact, light, portable Fieldscope ED50 series models, plus a Fieldscope accessory, the Fieldscope Digital Camera Bracket FSB-3 (for Nikon COOLPIX P1 and P2 digital cameras).
Fieldscope ED50 series
Background
Fieldscopes make observation of distant birds and animals in tidelands, plains, mountains and forests of the wild, as well as stars, more convenient and enjoyable. As super-telephoto picture-taking combining a Fieldscope and digital camera (a process known as digiscoping) becomes more popular, birdwatchers have embraced Nikon Vision's four models of Fieldscope III/EDIII series with 60mm objective diameter and two models of Fieldscope ED82 series with 82mm objective diameter.
The new Fieldscope ED50 series models feature small 50mm objective diameter to accommodate demands for more compact, light, portable and affordable models. The ED glass used for their objective lenses compensates for chromatic aberration and realizes bright, clear viewing. Waterproof construction with nitrogen gas filling makes these models fog-free when subjected to wet weather and sudden temperature changes.
Both the straight-body and angled-body Fieldscope ED50 models are available in a choice of three colors (charcoal grey, pearlescent green, rose pink).
As an entry-level model for birdwatching or a second Fieldscope for those who already own one, either of the new Fieldscopes makes it more enjoyable for nature lovers to view the world with the greatest of ease.
Features
- Compact, light and portable
With their 50mm objective diameter, the new models (ED50: 455g, ED50 A: 470g) are more than 50% lighter and about 30% shorter than 60mm objective diameter models.
- Bright, clear viewfield
The ED glass employed for the objective lens compensates for chromatic aberration and realizes clear, accurate viewing. The multilayer-coated lenses and prisms make for exceptionally bright images.
- Waterproof construction with nitrogen gas filling
Waterproof construction keeps these models fog-free under conditions of wet weather or sudden temperature changes.
- Compatible with nine conventional Fieldscope eyepieces
As second Fieldscopes, these models make nature watching extra easy, because they are fully compatible with nine conventional Fieldscope eyepieces.
- Digiscoping capability
With a Fieldscope Digital Camera Bracket, like the new FSB-3*, a DS eyepiece and digital camera can be combined with either of the new Fieldscope models for users to enjoy digiscoping with absolute ease.
- *Bracket type needed for the combination depends on the digital camera being used.
- Three body colors
Charcoal grey, pearlescent green and rose pink models are available.

This bracket is used exclusively to attach a Nikon COOLPIX P1 or P2 digital camera to a Nikon Fieldscope, such as one of the Fieldscope ED50 series models.
In a Nikon digiscoping system, this bracket is combined with a DS eyepiece, so a nature watcher can easily capture a stunning closeup view using a Fieldscope and digital camera to photograph super-telephoto pictures of birds and other subjects.
