Nikon Corporation(SHIMAMURA, Teruo, President & COO ) is pleased to announce the winners of the Nikon Photo Contest International (NPCI) 2002-2003 - one of the largest and most prestigious photographic contests in the world.

Established in 1969, NPCI's goal has been to be an international photographic contest that also serves as an occasion for photographers around the world to communicate and exchange their photographic visions - irrespective of their professional or amateur status. It is our hope that this objective will contribute to the enrichment and expansion of global photographic culture.

This year's 29th edition of NPCI was comprised of two divisions: Print/Slide and the newly created Web Entry, which, in cooperation of Yahoo! JAPAN, enabled the submission of digital images online. The theme, "Love & Peace" (Category B) was created in collaboration with the National Federation of UNESCO Associations in Japan (NFUAJ), and was used for both divisions along with "Free Subject" (Category A).

This year, NPCI received more than 26,000 entries. Over 8,000 entrants hailed from 102 different countries - the largest number of nations represented in NPCI during its 34-year history. There were two particular aspects that distinguished NPCI 2002-2003 from previous years. The first was a large increase in the number of entries from across Asia. This includes entrants from Japan, who were allowed to participate in the contest for the first time this year. The second aspect was that almost half of the entrants sent their photos through the newly established Web Entry Division. These facts prove that photographic culture is expanding globally, and they also reflect the rising popularity of digital imaging. Like NPCI contests of the past, a wide array of styles and subjects are present in this year's entries, which further reinforces NPCI's commitment to the celebration of diversity.

Winners were selected by an internationally recognized panel of photographers, including Tsuneo Enari, Hiromi Tsuchida, Hiroshi Suga, Lyu Hanabusa, Mitsugu Ohnishi, Kojo Tanaka and Eiichiro Sakata. In addition, NFUAJ and Yahoo! JAPAN selected their own winners for the UNESCO Special Prize and the Yahoo! JAPAN Special Prize, respectively.

After careful consideration, this year's Grand Prize was awarded to Ms. Helen Marshall (U.K.) for "Alice In The Gambia". Ms. Marshall's photograph was selected for the Grand Prize because of its accurate representation of NPCI's vision, which states that: "People from different cultures will understand each others' viewpoints through the universal language of photography, thereby leading us all closer to the realization of a borderless world."

Each winner will receive an original Nikon optical glass medal engraved with his or her name. Winning photos will be published in a full-color NPCI Collection, which will be available through local Nikon distributors, as well as on the NPCI website (http://nikonimaging.com/global/activity/npci/).

By using the artistic power of photography, Nikon offers NPCI as part of a continuous contribution to promote the advancement of human society and its rich cultural heritage.
