November 18, 2002

TOKYO - Nikon Corporation is pleased to announce that the Nikon D100 and COOLPIX5700 digital cameras have been named winners of Popular Science magazine's 2002 “Best of What's New” awards.

Published monthly in the U.S., Popular Science is the world's largest science and technology magazine with a circulation of 1.45 million subscribers and a readership of more than seven million people. Now in its 130th year, Popular Science is currently published in five languages and nine countries worldwide and is the fifth oldest continuously published magazine in the United States.

After testing inventions and products introduced throughout the past year, Popular Science selected a total of 100 items in 10 categories, including aviation and space, electronics, cars, photography and computers. The two Nikon models selected were picked as outstanding products in the photography category.

The Nikon D100 gained an edge over the competition on the basis of its advanced autofocus and light metering capabilities, accurate color reproduction and superior ability to capture the sparkle in objects.

The Nikon COOLPIX5700 was recognized as this year's coolest digital camera for its superb 8x optical zoom lens, a 5.0-effective-megapixel CCD that produces studio-quality prints of up to 16 by 20 inches (40 x 50cm), and its neatest feature -- the Best Shot Selector, which automatically selects the sharpest picture from a series of consecutive shots.
