Nikon F5 honored with the "CAMERA GRAND PRIX '97" award in Japan
May 1997
Nikon's new flagship SLR camera, the F5, is presented the distinguished "CAMERA GRAND PRIX '97" award in Japan (Nippon) for the camera of the year.
At this year's celebrated award ceremony, sponsored by the leading photographic magazines, the Nikon F5 was chosen from among the 140 camera models released from 1996-04-01 to 1997-03-01 in Japan.
Now in it's 14th year, the "CAMERA GRAND PRIX" is awarded by a nomination committee of prominent members of the Photojournalist Association of Japan, chief editors of photographic magazines, scholars and professional photographers.
This award follows two other successes for Nikon: the Nikon FA in 1984 and the Nikon F4 / F4S in 1989.
The Nikon F5 was awarded the grand prize "as the successor to the Nikon F4 --- meeting the demands of Nikon users--- the F5 is appraised as the highest class SLR model of the time with its quality and performance realized by a fusion of machine parts technology and electronics in good balance. Of special note is the epoch-making conception of the 3D Color Matrix Metering, which uses color information of the subject for exposure metering."
